Built originally as an impartial municipal defender, the Maceknight quickly became a symbol of oppression in some nations, owing to its inability to modify the force of its retaliatory strike. The first-built models never attacked before being struck themselves, but all it takes is one carefully edited Internet video of a giant stone robot annihilating a wave of civilians in a single stroke of its electromace to make a villain out of the entire line.

Unsurprisingly, the same video that vilified the Maceknight line also made it a proper staple in parts of the world whose governments require anti-riot measures, and rumor has it that some Units were even modified for sale without a retaliation inhibitor, allowing them to strike first. Demand was high enough that their maker developed yet-mightier models, capable of withstanding more punishment and retaliating with even more deadly attacks.
Gamma Lore (unlocked by killing Gamma variants)[ | ]
The organization that develops these Units still exists today, and Control was unable to convince the Board to purchase fresh Maceknight Units from a direct competitor. Instead, Arlan convinced the Board to allow him to forcefully borrow Maceknight Units from organizations around the world with poor asset oversight and protection procedures, and so every Maceknight a Contractor encounters during Site testing is stolen. The Board finds this an acceptable price, knowing that if the Project is a success, the odds of successful retaliation from those wrong organizations are rather low.
